Medical alert buttons

Medical alert buttons: real help, after the fall.

A personal emergency response system — the pendant or wristband with a button — has saved lives, and it belongs in many homes. It’s worth being clear about what it does and what it doesn’t.

What it does well: when someone falls and can’t get up, one press connects them to a call center that can summon help. Newer systems add automatic fall detection, location tracking, and two-way voice. For a person living alone, that shortens the worst-case wait between a fall and a response, which genuinely matters — a long “down time” on the floor is dangerous on its own.

Where the gap is: a button is a response to a fall, not a way to prevent one. It does nothing in the moment before — when the walker is across the room, the light is off, and the decision to go without it is being made. It also depends on being worn and being pressed, and many falls leave a person unable or unwilling to press. Fall detection helps, but false alarms lead people to take the device off, and it still begins its work only after the fall has happened.

The honest framing: a medical alert button is protection — it helps after a fall, by shortening the time on the floor. Reducing the risk of the fall in the first place is a different job. If the question you care most about is “how do we lower the chance of the fall,” a button isn’t the tool.

The Goose works mostly on that other side — the walker at hand, the lit path, the clear floor, the pause before you stand — and if a fall does happen, it detects it and gets help there, cutting the time on the floor too. Protection and risk-reduction, honestly separated.
